We have a few holidays coming up and this week’s holiday that we talked about is Hanukkah.  We talked about when Hanukkah happens and why it is celebrated.  The children were able to tell me what Hanukkah is by verbally stating that it is a Jewish holiday and that they do not celebrate Christmas.  They remembered that it is celebrated for 8 day starting at sundown and they they light candles on the menorah.   I read books to the children that helps further their understanding of what Jewish people do as a tradition on those 8 days.

We practiced writing Hanukkah related words, made a list of Oo words, learned what sound the letter Oo makes, and they practiced writing words that we made a list of.  We practiced writing names of numbers and the words here, are.  We also did a review of the letters we have been working on so far and they verbally stated what sounds each letter makes.

We played a game where they had to match the numbers to the dots on dice and then use the yellow unifex cubes to “light” the menorah, they used pom poms to trace the numbers 1-9 and then place the pom pom on the menorah.  They played the Dreidel game where they spun the dreidels and see what number they landed on.  They played a number memory game, counted 14 blocks and stacked them as tall as they could.

We painted the Star of David made out of popsicle sticks using blue paint and we did a watercolor dreidel.  The children did a Gingerbread house where they took turns to add frosting to the house and then added candy.  I was going to do it next week but the children had asked me if we could do it this week.  I turned it into our art project and it was so much fun!  We hope you enjoy our beautiful gingerbread houses that is located our hallway where the cubbies are and in our classroom on the Science table.

Next Thursday is our Polar Express Day and watch out for an email for me regarding this day.  Friday is School Age day and the big kids will be on Christmas break.
