Sun, Beach, Volcanoes and Luaus!

The children have enjoyed learning all about Hawaii this week. They were especially surprised to hear that it doesn’t snow in Hawaii. We read a story about a family who made sand angels and sand men on the beach and they talked about trying it when they go to the beach too. Monday in art the children painted with fly swatters, so fun to swat a large piece of paper with paint. In math the children ordered items by size, ukulele’s and tiki posts; and in language the children worked on placing items in different positions around a tiki post. This activity gave us a chance to see what positional words they were familiar with: under, on, next to, above, and below. Tuesday in art the children painted with water bottles using bright colorful paints and in math the children engaged in a count and clip activity. With this activity the children were given cards with items to count and then clip to the corresponding number on the card. The children also explored a pineapple faces matching game, the pineapple faces showed various emotions: tired, happy, sad, angry, worried, scared and excited. Wednesday in art the children explored crayon resist art, where they drew a picture with a white crayon on their paper, and then painted over with watercolor paint. In math the children looked at rows of items and talked about which item in the row was different, and why. In language the children matched lettered fish. Today in art the children glued flowers to green paper for a grass crown, and in math the children engaged in an Aloha bingo game. In language the children practiced their writing skills as they looked around the room for pictures of Hawaiian items, with the word. They had a clipboard and looked at the word to try and copy writing the letters. The children also painted some large boxes in art. Tomorrow is Hula in the Coola! We will have so much fun in the great room doing the Hula, the limbo and a dance party with other classrooms. In the classroom the children will explore art of rice in nylon stocking b painting and in math the children will work on number sequencing puzzles. In language the children will dictate what will happen, or what they will do when they go to Hawaii. In the sensory table this week the children worked with tropical fish in water with boats and in the block area we added sea animals. The most exciting of the week was learning a little bit about volcanoes, and the children noticed a volcano in many of the books we read this week.
