This week we went deep into the dirt and learned about bugs, insects and arachnids. We started off the week with a video learning about what the difference between a bug, insect and arachnid is. The children learned that insects and bugs both have six legs, a head, thorax and abdomen but the only difference is that an insect has wings. Now, an arachnid has eight legs like a spider or a scorpion. From there, we did many different bug and insect activities. The children worked on different math skills such as counting and patterning with the bugs and insects. At the language table this week, the children worked on letter matching games and writing some bug/insect words. The children became creative at the art table by making their own bug out of construction paper, a spider web using paper plates and string, fingerprint bugs and smash butterfly art (no butterflies were harmed in this art). This week we celebrated our friends, it was the Week of the Young Child and we did many different activities. On Monday, we did Artsy Monday where each of the classrooms painted a color of the rainbow…we had green! Tuesday was Tasty Tuesday where the children created a bug/insect out of grapes, graham crackers and bananas. Wednesday the children worked together with the other classrooms and planted. Thursday was Family Thursday where the children and their families could take pictures, design a picture frame and get the picture printed. We also had a special guest Councilman Tom Bullock come read to us. We will end the Week of the Young Child with Miss Carly from the Beck Center with music class. This week the children went to Playhouse Square to see ‘Don’t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!’ What a busy week we had! More fun coming next week.
