This week’s theme is a favorite among the children and it is Dinosaurs! We learned that they lived over 55 million years ago and did you know that Spinosaurus was the most dangerous dinosaur because it was not only bigger than T-Rex but they were versatile and able to reach any prey in land and water! The children learned that it was a close relative of T-Rex. They were able to flip through different books about Dinosaurs and we talked about how they were different in terms of sizes, colors, and what they ate. They learned that air and water animals were not technically dinosaurs but they lived at the same time as the dinosaurs. Scientists considered land animals dinosaurs. I explained to the children who were confused that they were considered early birds and early sea animals which seemed to help them understand better. The children were able to tell me which dinosaur was their favorite and the 2 that was popular were T-Rex and Brontosaurus.
The children practiced writing the letter Mm, we made a Mm word list, and we practiced reciting the sounds that the letters make. They practiced writing the names of dinosaurs, they did a dinosaur letter matching game. I read the book, How Do Dinosaurs Show Good Manners and I asked the children to recall details of the story which they were able to. They used the dinosaur books to help them match the dinosaur name to its picture.
They did an activity where they used legos or wooden blocks to measure the dinosaurs feet (I made a yellow rectangular foot on the carpet and an orange circle foot on the floor), counted out how many blocks or legos it took to measure out the feet. They did an activity called Dinosaur Count and Clip where they counted out the number of dinosaurs and clipped the number. They counted the number of dots and had to find the number that matched.
They drew a picture of a dinosaur by using the books as reference, they made dinosaur tracks with small dinosaurs and brown paint. They used bingo dabbers or chalk to create an outline by painted or coloring over the paper dinosaur. They were in awe of the effect it made!
This month, we will be learning about Cheetahs! The children are very excited to learn about the fastest land animal in the world! Did you know that they can run up to 75 MPH? That’s probably the fastest if we were racing them on the highway and they would beat us!
Please make sure your child has snow gear in their cubbies as the center does not have very many when other classrooms may be borrowing them. We do have hats and gloves for your children so that they do not loose the ones you purchase for your children. Write their names so that we know who the snow gear belongs to.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out!
