Oh! The Places You'll Go! - Pre-School

This week we are exploring the world of Dr. Seuss!  We read some of his great books - Oh! The Places You'll Go, The Tooth Book, Mr. Brown, Can you Moo?, Gertrude McFuzz and the classic Hop on Pop!

In language, we trace different letters using stencils, did some rhyming, made up stories using the story creating box and dictated what we would do if the cat in the hat visited our houses!  

We made goop for the sensory table and all the children have been having fun getting our hands dirty!

In art, we made green eggs (painting on paper), did some footprint painting and made some Gertrude McFuzz hats.  Friday we will be making Seuss World critters out of the recycled materials the children brought in.  Thanks to everyone who brought things in - we are excited to see what the children create!

Authors - Pre-School

This week we have been sharing books written by famous children's book authors and the children have been engaging in some fun activities! Monday in art the children painted with cotton balls and in math they played a path game to get the snowball down the hill. In science the children did a taste test of an apple, orange and a banana and charted which fruit they liked best. In language the children engaged in a who what when where why activity; the children were asked questions, and this is a good language experience to help children learn how to answer questions on topic. Tuesday in art the children cut out circles and glued them to paper, in math they hunted for numbers around the room and in language the children worked on telling stories using pictures of a person, place and action; another good language experience to put together words to make sentences. Wednesday in art the children painted at the easel, in math they worked with animal counters and 1 to 1 grid and in language the children worked on lower case letter recognition as they rolled a letter die and needed to find its match on their paper. Today in art the children marble painted and in math they played a mouse match game where they needed to match the colored mouse to the same color cheese. Tomorrow in art the children will paint with a painting tool fo their choice and in math they will play a chair number match activity and in language they will dictate what their story would be about if they wrote a book. In the sensory table this week the children explored letter stones with small trucks, ladles and bowls. In science the children explored inclines using wooden blocks and balls and they also have been working with the sound shakers.,

How to Be a Good Friend - Pre-School

This week the children explored Valentine’s day by learning about how to be a good friend and what it means to be someone’s friend. On Monday the children used a heart-shaped letter wheel to explore words sounds, in math, the children made necklaces while counting the beads and they also made valentines for their parents in art. On Tuesday the children were asked what they do on Valentine’s day and some of their answers were so adorable. In math, the children were given hearts with different patterns and they had to successfully find another student with the same heart pattern. In art, the children tore tissue paper and decorated hearts. On Wednesday in language the children worked on putting the heart alphabet in order, in math, the children compared boxes of chocolates by guessing which box had the most chocolates, and then they counted each box to see if their guesses were correct, and in art, the children used their thumbprints with ink pads to decorate the inside of hearts. On Thursday in language the children traced different zig zag heart lines to get to the last heart, in math the children were given an XOXO pattern and asked to complete it, in science they explored sensory bags made of cornstarch, water oil, and food coloring and in music, the children played a dancing game where when the music was paused they had to get to the nearest heart on the floor. On Friday the children will be asked who is their friends and why. They will also work on putting together heart puzzles and in art, they will decorate hearts using all different painting utensils. In the sensory table this week the children explored rice, sprinkles, and Valentine confetti with heart cookie cutters and different sized funnels. In the science area, we added fake flowers and magnifying glasses for the children to explore a flower.

Dental Health Week - Pre-School

This week we have been talking about how to take care of our teeth and we had some fun activities the children have engaged in. Monday in art the children painted with watercolors, in language they dictated what a dentist does and in math they played a dental health bingo game. Tuesday in art the children painted with hammers, and in language they matched letters to a tooth. Wednesday in art the children painted with toothbrushes and in language they wrote dental words for the word wall. In math we did as a large group sorting out pictures of foods that are good for our teeth and bad for our teeth. Today in art the children tore paper and glued to a tooth, in language they traced letters with shapes, and we extended the activity to learn some letter sounds using pictures to help sound out the words. In math the children worked with bear counters and 1 to 1 grid. Tomorrow in art the children will paint with a marshmallow and in language they will hunt for letters hidden around the room. In math the children will roll a die, count the dots and then find the matching number on a tooth. This week in the sensory table the children worked with cotton balls and various size cups.

All About Art - Pre-School

This week the children learned about some famous artists in history. Monday was Van Gogh and in art the children created art drawing with wet chalk. In language the children matched letters to a paint palette and in math they looked for hidden shapes around the room. Tuesday, Claude Monet, in art the children painted paper plate lilies, and in language the children dictated what art is. Wednesday, Mary Cassatt, in art the children painted dots used pencil erasers and in language they engaged their pre-writing skills by connecting dots. Today is Yayoi Kusama. In art the children worked their fine motor skills doing some cutting practice and in language the children the children did some more letter matching and in math the children sorted fruit counters and counted for more and less. Tomorrow will be Augusta Savage and in art the children will glue pasta to paper, in language they will dictate what they would create if they were a painter and in math the children will play a path game to get the paint brush to the paint cup, a good activity to work on 1 to 1 correspondence, counting and taking turns. In the water table this week the children worked with paint brushes, paint cups and trays and colored gems. The children have also enjoyed many gross motor activities in the great room this week such as cosmic yoga, listen and move activities, the slide, the monkey bars, , running, balancing plastic eggs and spoons, balance beam, jumping, hopping, running, crawling, musical cairs, and dancing and freezing. We hope the temps go up so we can go outside soon!

Exploring Black History - Pre-School

The children explored activities in relation to famous inventors and people in Black History. Monday in art the children engaged their small muscles as they cut, or tore, yellow, red, and green paper to glue together a traffic light. In math the children engaged in a bingo game, Dodgers Bingo to celebrate Jackie Robinson. Tuesday in art the children continued working on their traffic lights of cutting or tearing the paper. In math the children worked on number identification and putting numbers in order 1-10, and in language the children practiced writing letters. Wednesday in art the children mixed paint colors and discussed the colors that represent different shades of skin. In language the children dictated what they would invent for people use, and in math the children patterned Lego's. Today in art the children marble painted, but with a golf ball!! In math the children used tongs to pick up small pom poms and place them on golf tees, and then count when they finished. This was a good fine motor experience too. In language the children will dictate what their dream is. Tomorrow in art the children will create glasses using straws and paper. In math the children will count the numbers on a clock and tell what number the hand is pointing too and in language the children look at a picture and tell a story. In he sensory table this week the children explored baby doll shampoo ith baby dolls, brushes and loofahs!

Cooking is Fun - Pre-School

This week the children explored cooking themed activities and experiences in the classroom. Monday in art the children glued together a pizza by using a red paint/glue mixture to paint on sauce and then add yellow "cheese" paper strips, and green "peppers" and red "pepperoni" circles to the plate. In math the children sorted veggie counters by type and counted to see which had more and which had less. In language the children dictated a recipe of their favorite food to eat. Tuesday in art the children painted with either a potato masher or a fork, and in language the children looked at pictures of people cooking and dictated what they saw, what kitchen tools they were using and how they were using them. In the afternoon th children watched a little video of a child making a cake! Wednesday in art the children did some marble painting and uin language they practiced writing words of kitchen tools/appliances. The math activity we did as a large group experience of sorting pictures of foods we cook and foods we do not cook, and the children learned that some foods can be eaten cooked or not cooked. Today the children explored using a grater to help shred some zucchini for the chocolate zucchini muffins we made. This was a good fine motor/sensory experience. The children then watched a love cooking show of Miss Natalie mixing the ingredients together and we talked about how the ingredients consistency changed once it was all mixed together. The children are very excited to have a muffin at snack too! We combined our math and language experience together as the children played kitchen tool bingo. The children learned names of tools and they talked about what they are used for. The children then counted ow many pictures were on their bard once they got a bingo! Tomorrow in art the children will do some puffy snow painting and in math they will match number mittens to a number hat. In language the children will pick a letter out of a bowl, identify it and add it to a pot. This week the children were very creative in the sensory table exploring rice with ladles and ice cream scoops. We added yellow shreds of paper and plastic eggs too and we've been hearing lots of talk o make cakes, pizza, ice cream and soup!

All Things Space - Pre-School

This has been a great week exploring all things space! On Monday in art the children made spaceships with foil and cups. In math the children played outer space bingo and in language the children dictated what is in space. The children also worked on their eye hand coordination as they traced lines along a rocket ship to take off. Tuesday in art the children swirled red and yellow paint under saran wrap to create their very own planet. In language the children wrote while lying under the table, just like an astronaut!! Wednesday the children worked their small muscles while exploring playdough. In language the children tossed bean bags on to lettered plates and in math they matched planet numbers 1-10. Today in art the children did some coffee filter painting and in language they wrote letters and created constellations with star stickers at the points of the letters. In math the children-built rockets with sugar cubes, adding and counting the pieces. Tomorrow in art the children will work with shaving cream and watercolor paints by swirling marbles through the mixture. In language the children will dictate what they would take with them to space and i math they made craters with golf als and playdough. This week in the sensory table the children have been exploring rice with planets!

Fun With Dinosaurs - Pre-School

A favorite theme for the preschoolers, dinosaurs! Monday in art the children glued noodles to paper, "dino bones!" In language the children engaged in a dino bingo game and in math they rolled numbers and then needed to find the matching number on a dinosaur picture. Tuesday in art the children sponge painted, in language they dictated what would happen if they brought a T-Rex to school and in math they matched numbered dinosaurs. Wednesday in art the children did some painting with their feet, in language the children wrote their name as a dinosaur (i.e. Joeasaurus), this was a good activity to work with their pincer grip and letter recognition. In math the children sorted and patterned dinosaur counters. Today in art the children painted with dinosaur stamps, in language they traced letters with dinosaur counters and in math they played dinosaur lotto. Tomorrow in art the children will marble paint, in language they will create a list of D words and practice writing the letter D, and in math the children will roll a number and practice writing the number the die landed on. In the sensory table this week the children explored dinosaur counters with small colanders, tongs, and boats.

Celebrating Hanukkah - Pre-School

This week the children learned about Hannukah, the Menorah and what happens on each night of Hannukah. Monday in art the children did some dreidel painting, so fun! In language the children traced star shapes, which is another good fine motor experience. In math the children counted latkes and added them to a pan. Tuesday in art the children marble painted snow on trees, in language they engaged in Hannukah bingo and talked about the pictures on the board. In math the children played a Hannukah concentration game. Wednesday in art the children did some stain glass art, placing tissue paper on contact paper. In language the children matched lettered candles to a Menorah and in math they matched numbered candles to a menorah. Today in art the children practiced cutting and then glued the items to paper, they also explored stamping with ink pads. In language the children used their name cards to match similar letter in the names and in math the children again matched numbered candles to a menorah. Tomorrow in art the children will paint with candles, in language they will write some Hannukah words for the word wall and in math they will play the dreidel game!
