“Every Child is an Artist” – Pablo Picasso. These words are true because this week is Artist Week and the children got to explore the different types of things to create their own art. We talked about the different types of art and the different artists who are famous for certain type of media. I also talked about the different tools that artists use.
We made a list of Ss words, practiced writing the letter Ss, We did a 3 letter match and spell where the children had to find all 3 pieces of each puzzle piece that had a letter and part of a picture and when it is put together, it has the full word and picture. We did -ad rhyming words, practiced writing names of artists and tools they use, letter matching game, and we did a letter matching game.
The children did an activity where they put the numbers written on legos in order, counted the number of paintbrushes and wrote down the number. They played a count and match game, worked on a number puzzle mat while using pattern blocks, and we did number hopscotch. We did number recognition using the 100 Days of School chart. I pointed to the number randomly and they had to tell me what number it is.
The children had a lot of fun with art this week. it was messy but they had so much fun! They used clay and cookie cutters to create their own sculpture. They used a digital camera to take pictures of their peers and/or around the classroom, They painted on a canvas using different materials such as spray paint, drip art, paintbrush, and scrubbers. They made a Andy Warhol inspired project where they created the same image in different colors. .
Speaking of Artists and colors, we went to see the play, Rainbow Fish at Playhouse Square and the children noticed how colorful the stage and the puppets were. We talked about what we saw and what we thought about the play. One of the children commented that one of the artists probably did the colors and I asked which one, they said maybe a painter or someone who does paints the stuff for the stage. I explained that the stuff for the stage are props and the props can be a different types of things such as cloth, painting, wood, etc. When asked if they liked the play, they all said that they loved it and they want to go and see another play.
