We went Around the World “visiting” different countries. We went to Japan, China, Australia, Italy, Ireland, and Egypt. We learned about the culture, different goods they eat, what languages they speak, and what types of animals live that particular country. We talked about where the countries are located on the map. I showed the children pictures of things that are found in these countries such as chopsticks because Japan, Korea, and China use different chopsticks. We learned that Italian food in the US is not the same as in Italy. The children also listened to music from different countries as well It was fun “visiting” these countries and we hope to go there for real one day.
We learned about abacuses and what they are used for which is counting. We did an Australian Count and Cip where the children counted things that come from Australia. The children counted picked a number and counted out the number of pepperoni. They patterned with unifex cubes and they play Egypt Bingo.
They made a Hh word list, they named things around the classroom that started with Hh, The children did a Beginning Letter sounds game, we learned what different words look like in different languages and some of the children tried to write the word in that language. We practiced writing names of different countries.
They made a Japanese flag using ripped red paper and they glued the pieces inside of the circle. We painted an Italian flag and we made our own flags from different countries. Some of the children wanted to make their own flag They were very creative and they had fun with these flags.
We talked about how respectful we should be of other cultures because not everyone has the same views, some may not know English very well, and we should help others who are struggling. The people from different countries may feel homesick and they want us to be friends.
