It’s Five Senses week and it has been so interesting for our children. They naturally explore their environments using all five of their senses on a daily basis so this week has been relevant to them. We read numerous books and sang various songs that talk about body parts and worked on pointing to them after watching the teacher do it first. They danced and played peek-a-boo with our scarves, rolled balls back and forth with a teacher and friends, played with different types of musical instruments, chalked on chalkboards, and built block towers to knock them down and laugh about the whole process. For our youngest babies, we labeled their sensory experience for them – talking about how the textured pillows they were exploring were soft, fuzzy, and bumpy. All watched a puppet show with Old MacDonald while hearing what each animal says while also having the opportunity to play with each puppet afterward. Puzzles, lacing toys and stacking rings have been out to work on fine motor skills while practicing with a spoon continues at meals. Bubbles were taken outside for them to try to catch while they practiced getting up to push toys and moving forward. Touch and feel books were also explored as were many books that they like to “read” all by themselves. It has been a fun sensory week for the infant room and as always, we look forward to what excitement will pop up for next week.
