We love learning about bugs and insects.  Did you know that all bugs are insects but not all insects are bugs?  One of the characteristics is that bugs have straw-like mouths.  We talked about which bugs fly and do not fly.  Some bugs and insects may hurt us like bees, wasps, hornets, black jackets are some bugs that can sting us.  Some ants can bite us if we step on its hill and there are some bugs and insects they are harmless like ladybugs, fireflies, Daddy Longlegs to name a few.  Speaking of bugs and insects, our caterpillars are growling like a weed!!  The children can’t wait until they see them go up to the top where they will go into a pupa or chrysalis.

We made a list of bugs/insects that we are familiar with, practiced writing names of bugs/insects using the magic writing board, and we dictated, “What bugs/insects that we see outside”.  I wrote down the child’s dictation and they drew pictures.  They played a Letter Sequence game which helped with beginning sounds and letter recognition.  We practiced writing letters and we did a Butterfly Letter Match activity where they had to match the lowercase letters to the uppercase letters.

We did a Bug Math activity where the children had to pick a number and count out the number of bugs.  We did Match It addition, they made shapes with geoboards and shape bug cards. They did a caterpillar patterning activity using paint dabbers. The children also did a Bug Count and Clip activity where they had to count out the number of bugs and find the number that matches.

We also celebrate Week of the Young Child this week and the children did different things such as painting, making caterpillars out of grapes and bananas, planting seeds, taking family pictures, and music with Ms. Carly.  It was a fun week and the children seemed to enjoy doing different things. We had a guest reader,  Jessica Parker who came to read a story, Knuffle Bunny Too to the children.  They loved the story and it was so nice of her to read to the children.

We made caterpillars out of pom poms and craft sticks, coffee filter butterflies, and we made a ladybug in Art.   It was messy but fun and we loved it!

We went to Playhouse Square to see Don’t Let Pigeon Drive the Bus! and the children enjoying this play because they said on the bus what their favorite part of the play was.  The favorite part seems to be when they told pigeon that he can’t eat hot dogs!  My favorite part was when pigeon discovered that he can fly and he “flew” around telling the people that he bus will be 5 minutes late.

We had a very busy week this week and the children expressed how much fun they had this week.  We also talked about taking better care of our classroom books because we had a few friends not reading the books the correct way.  We talked about what we can do better next time because if we rip the book in any way, we will not be able to read it.  We practiced the proper way to hold a book, turn the pages, and placed it on the bookshelf.
