Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you had a great day with your families! We hope that you liked the flowers and cards that the children made! The children were asked what they did for their moms and we had a variety of answers. Some said they helped make breakfast for their mom, they went to the park, they went out to eat, and they gave presents to their mom. They said that their moms felt loved and they were happy to celebrate Mother’s Day with their moms. One of the children asked if there was a day for kids and I explained there isn’t a day but we have celebrations throughout the year such as Christmas, birthdays, Easter, and so on where they get presents and do fun suff. They expressed that they wanted a kids day so that they can get presents like their Moms did. We had a discussion that not everyone has a Mom because some may have only a dad, or grandparent, and aunt or uncle raising the child. Some children may have 2 moms, 2 dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, adoptive parent or foster parent raising them. There could be a multiple of people in one house raising children. We talked about different circumstances as to why the child doesn’t have both a mom and a dad. By the end of our discussion, the children seemed to understand that not everyone has the same family.
We did a “About My Mom” dictation where I asked the children questions about their mom and I wrote their answers down. The children did a Mother’s Day recipe card where they wrote down the ingredients they would need for Mother’s Day and they played an Alphabet Soup game where they and sort letters and objects into the cans that start with the letter. We created a word list of words that we did throughout the year. We did a letter sounds game where they had to say what the letter is, what sound it makes, and come up with a word that starts with the letter.
The children practiced writing letters using number cards and magic writing board, they did a Cookie Counting with Mom matching game, Muffins with Mom game where they had to count out “blueberries or chocolate chips” by picking a number card. We did some simple subtraction and played Number Bingo.
We made a very special art project for our moms this week. The children drew pictures of their moms and they made flowers out of construction paper and pipe cleaners.
This week, we noticed that some of our friends are not taking good care of our library books. The library books were being thrown around, dragged on the floor, tossed on the bookshelf, and the books were being used to scoot across the carpet. We had a discussion on how we take care of our books and the children were given daily reminders on how we take good care of our books, I showed them a book from 1998 that is in excellent condition because it was well-loved and taken good care of. The pages weren’t ripped and the cover of the book is intact.
