Happy Fall! It’s finally Fall and that means it will be cooler and it will be pretty outside. We talked about what sorts of things that are associated with Fall. The children were able to name things like going to pumpkin patches, apple orchards, and going on hay rides. They said that the days will be shorter and the nights will be longer. The children are so excited because they get play in the leaves, dress up for Halloween, and eat lots of food during Thanksgiving. We talked about Johnny Appleseed and why he was famous. The children thought he was a made up character but he was actually a real person who planted apple seeds as he was traveling West and even gave some to other people so that they can enjoy apples.
We did a Fall letter matching game where they matched the lowercase letters to the uppercase letters, they did an activity called, “What letter is missing” and they had to figure out what letter is missing. They practiced writing their names. We did an activity with Fall words and the children used the magnetic letters to match. They practiced writing letters using a dry erase marker and laminated alphabet sheet. This is good practice for children are having trouble writing certain letters or need a refresher.
The children learned how to use dice to figure out how many leaves they needed to count out and they did an activity where they picked a number and counted out acorns. The children did an apple patterning activity that was easy because they had to place the counters on top of the pattern but hard where they had to figure out what pattern comes next and to make their own pattern. We did number recognition where I pointed to different numbers and they had to tell me what number it was. They did a subitizing activity where they had to look at how many acorns are in front of them and say how many without using their fingers to count. I usually start off with 1-5 so that they understand the concept of subitizing and I gradually add more.
At art, they did a leaf rubbing project where they picked the leaves, placed them underneath the paper, and used a crayon to color over it. The children did a Good Neighbor art project with Ms. Judy. We did an Johnny Appleseed art project where they did gluing and make his face.
I read the book, The Very Greedy Bee by Steve Smallman as part of our Bees and Honey project and we talked about sharing because some of our friends are having a hard time sharing toys with others. I gave the children different scenarios and asked them what to do if someone did not what to share with them and how do we handle that. We talked about how to ask for toys that we want instead of taking toys from peers. I felt that this book was perfect to show them how to be kind to others and share.
We had some friends this week not taking good care of our books. We talked about how to take better care of our library books so that other people can enjoy them. I asked the children to show me how we turn the pages, how the books should be laid, and how we put the books back on the shelf. They were able to show and tell me how we take care of our books. They will be given reminders daily.
