This week is Dr. Seuss week and the children said they know who he is because they have his books at home. They were very excited because we read Dr. Seuss books. The children had to recall details in the story and they noticed that the words rhymed in the book or the book was silly. We talked about what we thought about the books. We also started the Book Playoff where we read books to the children and voted on the books that we liked the best. We will read 4 books each week and vote on Tuesday and Thursday until we get to the final bracket. The children can’t wait to see which book wins!
We did Xx word list, we practiced letter sounds, practiced writing sight words, we made a list of -in words where they had to figure out the beginning sounds, we did Match It! Rhyming where they had to identify what the picture is and find the word that rhymes. The children have been playing a game with peers while outside on the patio; they would say a number and the other children had to count out loud while stomping across the patio. This is a great way for them to count higher and higher. The highest number was 35.
We did shape numbers with pattern blocks and mats, we did number recognition where they had to name the numbers verbally that they recognized, and we did patterning with unifex cubes. We also did Match It! Addition and Subtraction where they had to add or subtract and find the answer. The children learned how to measure using unconventional items such as paper clips, unifex cubes, crayons, etc. and then they learned how to use a ruler to measure. They thought it was pretty neat that I had them measure and during self-directed play they used items such as blocks and dominoes to measure toys, our feet, and our peers They giggled and had so much fun doing this. They would tell me how many blocks their peer was or how many dominoes our tables are. They had so much fun using the items to measure and I think they learned a lot about measuring.
For art this week, we glued fish to yellow paper and wrote One fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue fish as it is written on the book cover. We made a Cat in the Hat where they colored, cut, and traced the lines and we did the Lorax where they made eyes, mouth, and made handprints for the mustache. They told me they love it when we get to use our hands to paint because it is so messy. Some of the children were making their own books and they would show me the book and tell me what the book is about. They certainly were extremely creative this week!
Our field trip to see Rosie Revere, Engineer & Friends is coming up next week and we are very excited! I will send a reminder email next week. I wanted to say thank you to Mrs. Kubinski for letting us borrow the books so that the children get a better understanding of what the play is about. Thank you, Mrs. Kubinski!
