Learning About Space!

It has been so much fun this week getting to know space and all that is in it! We have learned a new song, “There are 8 planets in the Solar System” and we have listened and sang it all week. It is helping us to remember not only how many planets we have, but the order in which they go. For art, we have made rockets and planets and moons. We used paint, markers and even tin foil to create our masterpieces. For math, we have given aliens some eyes, used our fingers to move stars and even used bean bags to shoot for the moon! We labeled numbered stars and counted planets, too! Some of our language activities were to make the letters in the sky with clear gems and scoop up letters with a spoon and put them in the night sky. Our sensory bin has been filled with black shredded paper and astronauts and aliens to add to the surprise. We have added large rockets and space ships to the block area to extend the block building. We came up with names if we were to discover our own new planet (see the front door of the classroom). These boys and girls are very creative! For a special treat, we ate Oreos! We broke them apart, eating just the cookie part first, as if we were eating phases of the moon… first a sliver of the moon, then more of a crescent shape, then a half moon, then the moon was gone! We sadly have not been outside this week due to the VERY cold temperatures, but we have been having some fun in the Great Room with having “moon” races and walking on the “moon”.
