This week’s theme is Cooking and we talked about what what type of things that we find or see in the kitchen and the children were able to verbally tell me. We had some kitchen items in the classroom that the children were able to identify and I brought some kitchen items from home that they did not identify. We talked about how the items were used and what other ways that we can use them in the classroom. For example, one of the children remembered that they painted with a potato masher in Ms. Tara and Ms. Chasity’s classroom. They remembered seeing me trace bowls to make circles and we used a fork to paint. There are so many different uses for kitchen items and they were surprised when I explained the different ways that we can use items. For example, we did a sorting activity with ice cube trays and they were able to tell me that the ice cube trays are used to make ice. We also talked about what foods our mommies and daddies make for us and how they make it and they were able to tell me where our food come from such as farms, stores, farmer’s markets, and animals. One child said that eggs comes from chickens and wheat comes from fields that farmers tend to.
We talked about our favorite foods and why they are our favorite in a dictation, they did a kitchen matching game where they had a picture of kitchen items and they had to figure out what sound the first letter makes and find the letter. They practiced writing letters and the letter Qq, they played a Alphabet Soup where they had to sort letters and items into the correct soup can with the letter. We made a list of -at words that rhyme and they had to figure out what words that ended with at.
They learned how to use measuring cups, they measured bear counters and counted how many each measuring cup can hold. They made numbers using Flexos, and they counted the number of chocolate chips on cookies and they had to figure out which number words matches with what they counted. We practiced counting by 2’s and 5’s verbally.
After reading the book, It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles Shaw, the children drew out a picture, cut it out, and pasted it on blue paper. They were able to tell me what it is. They did a spaghetti and meatball art project where they pasted white yarn on a plate, painted the yarn with red paint, and glued marshmallows that were painted brown on top of the “spaghetti”. They also did a popcorn treat project where they made a popcorn box and glued real popcorn pieces to it. It was so much fun using real food to create our art projects!
Please make sure your child has their snow stuff in their cubbies. If you do take them home, please remember to bring the snow gear back. We will be going on a field trip towards the end of the month so the field trip forms need to be signed. Please see me so that they can be signed. We will be going to see Rainbow Fish and we are so excited!
