While we are wishing for warm weather to get here soon, we did a Lu’au theme where we learned and talked about Hawaii and they learned interesting facts about Hawaii such as they say Aloha for hello and goodbye, people have to fly to get to Hawaii because the islands are surrounded by water, and that it does rain in Hawaii.  The children thought that it never rains in Hawaii and it is always sunny.  Some were surprised that Hawaii has a volcano that is active!

We made a list of Tt words and practiced writing Tt.  The children learned positional words where I showed them a word, asked if they could identify the word, and some of the children were able to identify a few of the words.  If were unsure what the word was, I helped them sound out the word by having them tell me what sound each letter makes and then put the sounds together to make the word.  I also had them do the movements such as “Put the ball in the sensory bin, put the ball under your chair, etc”. We also made a list of words that end in it where they had to figure out what beginning sound such as fit, bit, sit, etc.

We practiced writing 19. we did 2-D and 3-D shape matching where the children used the shapes in Math Area as reference,  We did a stack and count using red cups, We used snowflakes to count to 19 and the children connected the snowflakes to see how long it is when they add more snowflakes. One of the children said they got to 29 but they could not go any longer because the snowflakes kept coming apart so I suggested they figure out many snowflakes our table was.

We made a lei using paper flowers, yarn, and beads.  The beads were hard for the children to push though so I cut up drinking straws up into little pieces so that they are able to push the yarn through.  We made a grass skit out of tissue paper that I cut up.  I gave them white paper to draw for the band of the grass skirt, then we cut it into 2 pieces where they glued the green tissue paper to the white paper.  We made a paper hibiscus flower where the children cut the flower pieces and glued them together.

We had our Hula in the Coola and they had so much fun learning and doing the Hawaiian dance.  We did limbo with Preschool and i expressed that we all have to take turns but they were so sweet looking out for the little ones when we were doing the dance together.
