The children have enjoyed this week’s activities, each day is based on 1 author where we have read their books and done activities in relation to the author’s stories. Monday’s author was Audrey Wood and we started the day reading, The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry and The Big Hungry Bear. The language activity was a dictation where we asked, where would you hide your strawberry? In math the children matched numbered strawberries to the matching ten frame, this experience incorporated lots of counting! In art the children painted a strawberry and added red sequins. Tuesday’s author, Jan Brett, and we started this day reading The Mitten and the language activity the children re-told the story using pictures. In math the children matched cotton balls to the number of dots on a mitten and counted to see how many. In art the children cut and glued yarn to a mitten. Wednesday’s author, Eric Carle and we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and in language the children dictated what they would eat if they were the very hungry caterpillar. In math the children engaged in a path game to get the caterpillar to the cocoon. Today’s author is Margaret Wise Brown, she’s famous for the book Goodnight Moon so we read another book, My World and this book the children were asked to listen for the words that rhymed. In language the children worked with the storyteller’s box activity; with this activity the children picked 3 pictures out of 3 boxes labeled who, what and where. The children then used the pictured to tell a story or come up with a simple sentence. In math the children engaged in a pillow concentration activity and in art they painted with Loofah’s. Tomorrow’s author is Kevin Henkes, and we will read the book Wemberly Worried. In language the children will trace their names with bingo dot markers and in math they will work on more and less. The children will roll a die and take that number of crayons and place into a bowl, the next child goes and so on. At the end of the activity the children will look to see which color crayon had the most in the bowl, and which had the least. In science this week the children explored magnets, wands, and magnet balls and colored paddles with pictures. In sensory, the children worked with soapy water, wash clothes, and a dish set to practice washing dishes. Here are more books we read this week from each of the authors.
