This week’s theme is Pets. We talked about what kind of pets we have and what we want to have. We talked about different breeds because some of the children were able to tell me what kind of dog/cat they had. They were able to tell me how much their pet weighs. I showed the children animal x-rays so they can see what it looks like inside of the animals. The children recognized that the animals had skeleton. When asked what kind of animals they would love to have as pets, they children said dragons, monkeys, lions, tigers, and some named Pokemon characters. It was interesting to hear because we would think of household animals, not wild animals.
I asked the children if they had any pets and I made a chart. We found that most of us have dogs and a few of us have cats. We practiced writing names of pets they we can have, we reviewed letters, played a beginning sounds game, and practiced writing letters. We did a Three-Letter Match and Spell, Four-Letter Match and Spell, and we made a list of Pets.
The children sorted the pets by where they live: land, air, and water. We used small animals to count to 28 and we practiced counting the Math Way. We used the chart to figure out which household had less, more, or equal number of pets and we have found that dogs were the highest number and cats were the lowest number. We did a pet comparing activity using farm and pet counters. They had to figure out if the animals were pets or farm animals and then the children were able to tell me how the animals were similar.
The children drew pictures of their pers or pets they would like to have, we made a dog and cat by cutting out the shapes, gluing them, and drawing the eyes, nose, and mouth. Some of the children asked if they could make their own pets by using different colors and shapes. They were really creative when they made their pets. When asked what they made, some said dragon, dinosaurs, Pokemon, etc. They definitely had interesting animals but I enjoyed seeing their creations come to life.
We have a field trip to Emerson Elementary School coming up. The children are so excited to visit Kindergarten classrooms! Please make sure your child is here at the center by 8:45 am and I will send out a reminder on Monday or Tuesday.
