This week’s theme is Gardening and the children were able to tell me the different types of gardens there are. Some told me that they have a garden at home and when I asked what kind, they told me flower. Other children have said they see gardens at the Botanical Garden because they were there last summer with PreK. I asked if they remember what kind of flower gardens, they said, flowers and roses. They also said that there are fruit and vegetable gardens where people can grow their own food. We learned new fruits and vegetables that we have never heard about and the children were curious about them so I looked them up on the iPad and showed them what they look like.
We made a list of fruits and vegetable that we can grow and I write them down on strips of paper. The children used the words that I had written down and matched the letters using magnet alphabet letters. They did an activity where they had to match the lowercase letters to the uppercase letters on the flowers, They made letters using popsicle sticks.
They did an activity where they had to pick a flower with a number on the pot and count the “seeds” (black beans) and they rolled the dice and counted the “seeds” (navy beans) using 1:1 correspondence. Some of the children asked if they could count all of the seeds that I had in the bin which was perfectly fine with me and they told me there were 54 seeds. They used the colored wooden cubes to make numbers using number cards as reference and some of the children also made flowers using the wooden colored cubes. We did number recognition as well. i went higher than 45 to help them identify numbers that are higher.
The children drew their own versions of gardens, they painted flowers using the bottom of pop bottles, and they glued flowers to paper. We did a project where we put potting soil in a cup using a measuring cup, placed 4 sunflower seeds on top of the soil, added more soil to cover the sunflower seeds, and added water so that they can grow. The children have been checking each day to see if the sunflower seed has sprouted and they also have been checking to see if the soil is wet/dry. If the soil is dry, they added water to the soil. They are so excited to see the sunflower seed to sprout. I explained that it will take some time.
I wanted to say thank you for the donations for Safe Harbor Animal Rescue, they will be so excited to have the items which is helpful! The children would tell me each morning if they see new items being donated and they will be taken to the rescue soon.
