“Stop, Drop, and Roll” is what the children learned this week. We learned about fire safety and community helpers this week. We talked about what to do in case of a fire. Most of the children said, “Get out!” We talked more in depth about what we should such as call 911, crawl under the fire, carefully tap the door handle to see if it’s hot, and listen to adults. I gave the children different scenarios as to what to do and they were able to give me examples but the most important one is to listen to adults so that they can guide us in the event of a emergency. This would be a great way to let you child know what they should do at home in the event of an emergency. We talked about other community helpers and how they help us. A doctor helps us feel better and fixes our booboos, a nurse checks our vitals, a veterinarian fixes our animals when they are sick or hurt, a police officer helps us when we are lost or if we need help in any way to name a few. We talked a little about stranger danger because we wanted the children to understand who they can go to if they are lost or need help.
We played, “Who Am I? game where the children were given tools that a community helper uses and they had to say the name of the community helper. We did an activity where we had to find the letters and match them to spell fire safety words, we traced lowercase letters using cars, we practiced writing names of community helpers, We had to match tools to the community helper by looking at the words underneath the pictures. We made and Ee word list
We practiced counting to 30 using the calendar and 100 Days of School chart, we used cars to trace shapes, we did a Community Helper Count and Clip where they had to count the tools a community helper uses and clip it using a clothes pin. We did a fire safety patterning activity
As I previously stated, we practiced Stop, Drop, and Roll. This will help your child learn how to put out the fire if their clothes caught fire. We practiced crawling under the smoke and how to tell if the door handle is hot. I had them hold their hand out to “feel” how hot the door handle was. They were taught how to crawl under the smoke if the room was smoky. I told them that this will prevent them from inhaling smoke. I also explained that their mommies and daddies will tell them exactly what they want them to do in the event of a fire. We talked about only calling 911 if there’s an emergency and we cannot call if we want to order pizza or just to talk with the 911 operator. i explained that the line needs to be free so that people who do have an emergency can call 911.
In Art, we made fire truck, police car, and painted a pumpkin. They did their own spin on the art projects because I wanted them to show their creativity, Some of the children made a pole that will stop the bad guys while others wanted a light blue siren on top of the police cars. I gave them all the tools and they went to work.
It was a lot of information this week, but I do hope to was helpful. We had our pictures taken and I know they turned out so cute! The children noticed that a few people working outside our fence and wondered what the poles were sticking out of the ground, I explained that they were putting up a new fence so that we have a bigger area to play in. The fence keeps us safe and tells people not to go near where we play.
Please remember to take your child’s nap bag home at the end of the week.
