We started our week with fake ice and snow in the sensory bin! We also added real ice to the mix and we all realized just how cold our hands can get when we play in the ice for a short amount of time (but that didn’t stop them from playing!). We added mittens and hats to our drama area and set up some items for a “hot chocolate stand”. Our art for the week was all about “snow” and painting with white paint. We used lots of colors and texture to make snow scenes and even made a few “snowmen” along the way! We also colored a small wooden snowflake ornament and tried our hand at cutting snowflakes from paper. Some of our math activities were to look at the number on the snowman’s hat and give him that many buttons, and roll and cover snow globe using small Christmas erasers as the “marker”. Our science had magnetic triangles to build with and we added some small bells to the mix to see who could design a small tree with the materials. We did an experiment with snow and ice as well. We brought in a bowl of snow and had a bowl of ice. We predicted which would melt first in the classroom. The snow melted first and then we discussed all the reasons why. We also talked about how dirty the snow was when it melted so we decided we shouldn’t eat it anymore. Outside on the patio, we added three small evergreen trees to our garden (have you seen the area outside? Take a peek sometime and see where your child likes to play!). We decorated one of the trees and took turns adding some small ornaments on the tree for a pop of color for the season. Our letter of the week was M. So many words start with the letter, so we made a list! We came up with over 20 words on our own! We had a Great Room day and decided to make “snow stations”. We had bowling (with snowmen pins), cups to knock down with “snowballs” and we also “ice skated” with paper plates around the mat. We will end our week with a music class and more snow and cold fun!
