Love is in the air and we got to celebrate Valentine’s Day all week! We started off our week discussing the history behind why we celebrate this day. Bishop Valentine loved the concept of love but Emperor Claudius did not so way back in AD, he stopped people from getting married. But Bishop Valentine did not care so he decided to marry people in secret. From there, he ended up getting in trouble (sent away) and he ended up falling in love with someone and wrote this lovely lady love notes and signed them “Your Valentine.” Eventually Bishop Valentine passed on February 14th which is why we celebrate love on this day….who knew history could be so fun! From there, the children did many fun activities such as letter recognition and feeding the Valentine Dragon ABC hearts. The children worked on beginning sounds and letter matching. At the math table this week, the children sorted and made patterns with candy hearts and worked on some number recognition activities. At the science table, we worked on fine motor skills by playing with tops. The children became creative at art by using heart cookie cutters to stamp on paper, a love monster created with a fork, coloring a heart made out of a coffee filter and creating their very own love bug. We also got to decorate our own pretzel thanks to Miss Brenda! We also learned that Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world such as Denmark, Germany and Brazil. Some celebrate the same day as us while others celebrate it in a different month…how cool is that!? Taking a step back from Valentine’s Day, we worked on the letter of the week which was Tt. We will end our week with our Valentine’s Day party and passing out Valentines. We hope the children enjoyed this week and we hope that you all stay warm and have a wonderful weekend.
