If you were an author, what would you write about? This week was about five different authors and the books that they wrote or both wrote and illustrated. On Monday, we learned about Chris Van Allsburg who is an American author and illustrator. He wrote the Polar Express and Two Bad Ants. To go along with those books, in the morning, the children had to match the number of marshmallows in the cup (since the children on the polar express drank hot chocolate) at math and put the trains in ABC order at the language table. They even drew their favorite thing about the Polar Express….most friends drew the train itself. In the afternoon, we worked on activities that went along with Two Bad Ants. These activities included putting the ants in numerical order 1-20 at the math table and writing the letter Aa at the language table. At art, the children made little ants using their fingerprints. On Tuesday, we learned about Steve Antony who is a British author and illustrator and is known for The Queen’s Hat and the Mr. Panda series. In the morning we worked on activities that went along with The Queen’s Hat such as patterning with mini hats, designing our own hat and coming up with rhymes for the word hat. In the afternoon, we read Thank You Mr. Panda and the activities included feeding the panda bamboo at math, making a panda using a fork and we worked on ABC letter pegs. Wednesday, we learned about Judith Schachner who is also an American author and illustrator and the main character of her books are her cats. You might know this one cat as Skippy Jon Jones or Skippito Friskito! The children made a cat face using a paper plate, put whiskers on cat’s faces at the math table and did an ABC match game at language with kittens and yarn. Thursday we moved to Mercer Mayer an American author who is known for the series Little Critter….love that little guy! We read a few of his books. The activities the children worked on were subitizing (number of dots on a pillow and match that with the number on the blanket) for when Little Critter needs a nap. We played animal bingo because you have to include Little Critter’s friends in the fun! The children made a porcupine at the art table by using ripped paper and q-tips. To end the author week on Friday, we will dive into the work of H.A. and Margaret Rey who wrote Curious George and a fun book called Pretzel about a dachshund. In the morning the children will work with the barrel of monkeys at math and letting us know what they would do if they caught Curious George getting into trouble. In the afternoon, the children will work on putting dots on a dog at the math table and playing a dog and bone game at the language table (great for working on our listening ears!). We also did our letter of the week which was Vv and wrote out some words, sang a song and read a book. Oh, we also went outside this week!! Seems like it has been awhile. We will end this fabulous week with our favorite….music class!
