It’s a week all about numbers and with several of our children having their first birthday recently, the number one has been in the forefront of many of our discussions. We have done fun fingerplays and songs that contain numbers (Five Little Ducks, Five Little Pumpkins, Five Little Monkeys), many with props to accompany them, and they love to hear them over and over. Fine motor activities have included nesting cups, puzzles, pulling scarves out of the top of a container, and using numbered bean bags to put into and dump out of baskets. They have the containers and lids out to explore and some of our older children are trying to match the lid to the corresponding bowl, how proud they are of themselves when it happens. Number stamps, chalk and chalkboards, and coloring on paper have been the main art activities this week (many are learning how to hold a crayon, move it to a piece of paper and make marks). Outside play with bubbles blowing in the wind has been fun all while taking tentative steps with push carts or on their own. Ribbons, scarves and various other musical instruments have been used to dance, make music and move to songs they are hearing. Numbers have been everywhere in their play and they have had so much fun, now we move onto next week where we will take a trip around all different places and discover how babies and their families live and learn in their part of the world.
