Well, it may not be Pre-K, but we sure did enjoy talking about what happens in the kitchen including safety, meal prep and most important…food! We discussed our favorite meals and even told a recipe or two (we really don’t know much about temperatures on a stove or how long something goes in the oven, but that sure was fun to tell the story!). We painted with colored ice, we made a noodle art collage, we used food coloring to “paint” a piece of bread and then we toasted it (predicting what would happen to it before it came back out of the toaster of course!). We strung Froot Loops on a necklace for a small motor activity (of course some of those got a taste test!). The sensory bin was filled with “spaghetti” (white yarn pieces and red pom poms for meatballs). We used tongs and bowls for the “presentation” of the pasta! We also learned the song “On Top of Spaghetti” because it went with the activity. We heard a book about how peanut butter and jelly got together so we then learned the song “Peanut Butter and Jelly”. For math, we did a lot of sorting, patterning and counting small fruits and vegetable manipulatives. We also heard many diverse books about a variety of food from different cultures. One of our favorites was “Bilal Cooks Daal” because it had boys and girls in it that not only eat the food, but they helped make it first! This week, we learned all about what a tally mark was. We did some simple counting each day, asking the boys and girls to vote on something (butter or no butter on pancakes, grape or strawberry jelly, snowman or sledding…) and then used tally marks to see which answer got more votes. We used words like “greater than” or “bigger” and “less than” or “smaller”. When we told the class that this was something that big kindergarten boys and girls do, they smiled from ear to ear that they were doing “big kid” work! The letter of the week was “Oo”. We heard the story and song and then made a list of things that start with ‘O’ and another list of items that were a circle, just like the shape of the letter. We will end the week with a pizza day. We have a few pizza books and then we will be making our own individual bagel pizzas to wrap up the week.
