What a fun week we have had discovering what our five senses are and how we use them. The older children have been working on finding body parts to point to as the teachers call them out and right now the belly is the easiest to find and is definitely a fan favorite. We have given them a lot of fine motor activities to explore while we talk about what everything feels like – the rings on stacking rings were smooth, the rings they dropped into containers were bumpy, and the animals for the lacing toys were soft. We also were able to talk about the colors and the shapes they were seeing and playing with throughout the day. When we played some of their favorite songs, we would tell them to listen by pointing to our ears, for the movement parts to start so they could join in and participate. As they ate lunch, we talked about what they were eating – colors, shapes, and tastes. They stacked with blocks, explored peg boards, felt shaving cream bags filled with various colors, stamped with letter stamps, and danced with ribbons. The older ones tried their hand at pulling pom poms out of the center of a whisk, shook shakers, and made up and down marks on a chalkboard. The younger babies felt sensory books with help, played peek-a-boo with a teacher hiding behind scarves, and watched puppets. They listened to songs with the older children about the different senses and songs that contained their names in them. It has been a busy week discovering what things smell and taste like as well as playing with items that have had different textures. Next week it is a St. Patrick’s theme, can’t wait for the many different shades of green to explore!
