This week we learned about Dinosaurs and it also happens to be one of the most popular themes among the children. We talked about what we know about dinosaurs and how big/small we think they were. The children asked different questions to further their thinking such as “What made the dinosaurs go extinct, they the dinosaurs cause the one continent split up into the continents as they are today, etc”. We learned how to look up information on the iPad and they were able to view a short video about dinosaurs.
We made a list of Mm words where the children were able to come up with a huge list of Mm words. We actually came up with over 25 words! They practiced writing Mm, did, it, and they also wanted to write some of the Mm words that I had on my dry erase board. They practiced writing names of dinosaurs, played a game where they matched Triceratops uppercase letter to the lowercase letter, and they matched the names of dinosaurs to the picture of the dinosaurs while using the dinosaur books as reference.
I used the carpet in my classroom as a dinosaur foot and the children used the unifex cubes as a measuring tool to figure out how big the “dinosaur’s foot is”. They had to count how many unifex cubes and write the number down. They came up with different answers as 108 being the highest and 11 being the lowest number. They did a Triceratops number matching game where they had to count the dots and find the number that matches to what they counted. They played Dinosaur bingo and Dinosaur Math Counting and Comparing game where they had to count the dinosaurs and see which one was least/most. They learned how to measure the length and width of dinosaurs using unifex cubes.
We did a dinosaur experiment where the children got to see the dinosaur grow in the bucket of water. They had to guess how the dinosaur will get and then they will see how small the dinosaur will get when it comes out of the water. We drew pictures of dinosaurs using the books as reference, the children made dinosaur tracks using brown paint and little dinosaurs, and they did dinosaur stamp art using stamps and paint.
Sparkles, our Christmas Elf made his appearance. He will be with us during the day and he will return to the North Pole until he has to return to the North Pole to help Santa Claus and his fellow elves get things ready for Christmas. We are so excited that December is here because that means that Christmas is coming!
