This has been a fun-filled, hands-on week of gardening! We have been playing in the dirt in the classroom! Our sensory bin is full of dirt, flowers, (fake) worms, shovels and flower pots. We have been so dirty inside the classroom! For art, we used cut materials to make “flower” shapes and we also had a vase of flowers in the middle of the table to color what we see. After hearing the book, The Carrot Seed, we used an orange sponge to make carrots growing in the dirt. Some of our math activities were centered around counting out beans for flower pots and using flower gems to fill in 10 frame charts. Our first language activity for the week was to put the flower stems in the “garden”. Each flower had a letter on it and they were to match up the lowercase letter in the “dirt”. We also read color words when we chose a card and found the corresponding flower of that same color. We also used flower gems to trace our names that were written out on paper. Our science table has been busy with Lego flower builders. We saw the creativity flowing as the boys and girls built flowers and more flowers and connected them by leaves and stems. Our big project this week was to plant! We drew a smiley face on a cup, and put dirt in the cup with a handful of grass seed. We can’t wait to watch for the grass to grow so we can give our faces a “haircut”.
