This week , we talked about weather and what types of weather we see in Ohio. The children were able to tell me that different types of weather such as rainy, windy, snowy, foggy, ice, hurricanes, tornados, floods, to name a few. We talked about the weather in different parts of the world because not all countries have the same weather. The children learned that some places only get snow while other places are hot and do not get snow. We also talked about which part of the United States is warm, cold, and has all 4 seasons. One of the children said that some places get tornados and hurricanes and we rarely do. Other children said that it doesn’t snow in California because it gets hot but it does snow in Ohio.
We practiced writing weather related words, made a list of Ll words. The children did a cloud and raindrop alphabet matching game, they practiced writing letters Aa-Ll, and they dictated what the weather was like. We also played a weather words matching game where they had to match the weather words. We recited the letter sounds while using the alphabet chart as a reference. This is a great way for letter recognition.
The children did an activity where they made numbers out of snowflakes and they used number cards. They did a 2-D cloud shape recognition activity where they had to say what the shape was and how many sides it has. We did an apple counting activity where they counted the number of apples. We did a math activity where the children put either 0-10 or 11-20 in order. They did a number matching activity where they had to count the dots on the sun and find the number that goes with it.
The children made a cloud and raindrops in art where they used scissors to cut the cloud out, wrote each letter of their name on raindrops, and glued the raindrops to the cloud. They made a sun using yellow circles and orange triangles and they made a snowy scene by gluing cotton balls to light blue paper.
We made homemade applesauce and we had so much fun making it! We used the apple corer and slicer because we wanted the children to be safe. They loved it and asked if they could do another apple. This is a great fine motor activity because some of the children told me that it was a little hard turning the crank but once they got used to it, it got easier. They asked a lot of questions about how does the apple skin come off and how does the apple get cut into spiral. I showed them each part of the apple corer and slicer by using the apple so that they can see how it gets cut and skinned.
We had our Thanksgiving Feast and the children finally were able to wear their turkey hats they made last week. They were so excited to wear them and they asked if they can wear them home. I told them they could take them home and some of the children told me that they want to wear their hats for Thanksgiving next week. Our Thanksgiving Feast was a huge success!
Our conferences are on Monday, School Age Day is on Wednesday, and we are closed Thursday and Friday. Please make sure you take your child’s nap bag home so the nap stuff can get washed. This is the time of the year where children will start getting sick. If you haven’t done so, please make sure your child has extra clothes. Children tend to grow fast and they may not fit in the clothes they currently have.
