This week we learned about so many people who have touched what we heard, read and danced to over the years. We started off our week with learning about Martin Luther King Jr. We heard part of his famous speech and talked about what a “dream” is. We clarified it to be a big “wish”. We all agreed to have that wish that everyone should be kind to each other, no matter our skin color, race or gender. On Tuesday, we talked about Maya Angelou and we we learned her quote, “Try to be the rainbow in someone’s cloud.” We took that as to cheer someone else up when they are feeling down. On Wednesday, we talked about the women in space and about Mae Jemison who was the first African American woman astronaut. Thursday was all about Augusta Savage. She was an activist for rights and used sculpting as an outlet for her pain and struggles. We also heard many musical artists that have performed wonderful music to dance to, chill out to or just dream about. To name just a few, we listened to The 4 Tops, The Jackson 5, Whitney Houston, Ella Fitzgerald, and so many more! It was wonderful to see the children move and dance to songs they were unfamiliar with (and maybe knew some of the more recent singers like Beyonce and John Legend). We colored and sculpted for art this week. Our math was all about counting, sorting and patterning. For language activities, we put together ABC puzzles and used the alphabet stencils to help us with writing our letters. Our letter of the week was “Q” so we included Q-tips for a small motor activity and explored how we could build with them. Our sensory table has been filled with black beans, white beans (to explore the insides vs. the outside of the beans) and various scoopers, cups and containers. We did not get to go outside this week, but again made the Great Room a fun place to be with the new basketball hoop, many various obstacle courses and a few yoga sessions. Cross your fingers for an early spring!
