Our theme this week is Black History.  We talked about the different people who paved the way for others by helping making changes to something that wasn’t kind.  The children learned that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister who helped change laws so that everyone can play together, Ruby Bridges changed school rules so that everyone can be in the same classroom, Bessie Coleman was the first African-American woman and Native woman to hold a pilot license, Garrett Morgan invented the traffic light with three signals, George Washington Carver was the first man to invent 300 ways to use peanuts, and Rosa Parks helped changed the law so that everyone can sit wherever they want on the bus.  The children learned that there are more people who helped change things or were the first ones to create inventions.  They learned that change isn’t easy but necessary because some things back then are unfair and cannot happen today.

We listened to Dr. King’s speech and we talked about what we learned about his speech.  They said that they are happy that they can play with whoever they want, they are glad that we can sit wherever we want, and go to school wherever we want.  They are happy that laws got changed because they would be sad if they couldn’t play with whoever they want or go to the same school with their friends.  They said that the people who were a part of the Civil Rights Movement are brave people who did not let anyone get them down.

We made a list of Ss words, practiced writing names of famous Black history people, letter recognition, and letter sounds.  We went to Playhouse Square and saw Goodnight Moon and the Runaway Bunny and we talked about what we saw and which one was our favorite.  Most of the children said that Goodnight Moon was their favorite.  We recalled the details in the play as well.

The children played a Monopoly game where they had to count the coins, number pf spaces, and figure out how much a property costs.  We did number recognition activity where they had to say what the number was on the card they picked.  The children did a bean bag activity where they threw bean bags with numbers on it and they had to try to get the number that matches the bean bag.

The children drew a picture of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, they drew made a blue print of something that they wanted to invent, and we did a Jackie Robinson art project where they had cut out a baseball, baseball hat, and glove to the construction paper.

We had music with Beck Center and we look forward to seeing Ms. Carly because she teaches new signs and songs!  I have the Valentine Celebration sign up sheet on the parent board.  Please feel free to sign up!  I will send out a reminder a few days before our celebration.
