This week’s theme is Dental Health. We talked about what foods are good for our teeth and bad for our teeth. The children said that candy, some cereal, and junk food are bad for our teeth because it can give us cavities. Healthy foods like carrots, celery, apples, bananas to name a few are good for our teeth. We talked about when we should brush our teeth which is after eating, in the morning, before bed, and some of the children told me that they brush their teeth if their teeth feels yucky. They know that it’s important to brush our teeth at least twice a day. We talked about the difference between a dentist and a dental hygienist. A dental hygienist takes pictures of our teeth and cleans our teeth and a dentist uses the x-rays that the dental hygienist took of our teeth to see if we have any cavities or not. If we have any cavities, the dentist can fix them. Some of the children said that when they first went to the dentist, it was scary but they aren’t scared of the dentist at all!
The children did a good/bad food sorting activity where they had to sort the different foods in the correct category. They did a matching activity where they had to match uppercase teeth to the lowercase teeth, they practiced writing letters, they made a list of Ww words, and dictated, “Why I brush my teeth…” and drew a picture. They practiced writing dental words as well.
They did a counting activity where they had to count out the number off “teeth” which were marshmallows and find the corresponding tooth number. They did a matching activity where they matched the number on the toothbrush to the number on the tooth, they practiced writing numbers 0-50 using a dry erase marker. They also did an activity where they had to the 1-100 chart puzzles together. Each puzzle had different colors indicating easy to hard ones.
They drew pictures of foods that are good and bad for our teeth, they painted using a toothbrush and white paint onto a paper tooth. They also did dental floss art where they used real dental floss and paint.
We had the school age children this week because of the cold temperatures but every one had a great two days and I think the big kids learned as much as the PreK children. They all talked about what they had learned this week and what they learned in school as well.
Speaking of the school age children, we will be going to Emerson Elementary School on Tuesday to see the Kindergarten classrooms and if your child isn’t going there or the Lakewood school district, it’s okay because we just want them to see what a Kindergarten classroom looks like and learn what to expect when they go off to school. This helps ease any fears they may have.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.
