This week, we learned about our five senses.  We learned that we see with your eyes and that not everyone can see because some people are blind or they can’t see very well.  The children learned that people like me cannot see very well and we need glasses to help us see or read.  They learned that we hear with your ears.  Not everyone can hear because some people are deaf or hard of hearing.  Those people may use sign language to communicate and they would need hearing devices such as hearing aids, Cochlear implants, (CI) or Bone Anchor Hearing Aids (BAHA) to help them hear.  They learned that these devices do not restore their the person’s hearing but it helps them hear things.  They learned about a famous woman named Helen Keller and she was blind and deaf but went on to become a writer and a disability rights advocate.  We taste things like food with our tongue because that’s where our taste buds are.  There’s 4 different taste buds such as sweet, sour, salty, and bitter.  We smell things with our nose.  The children learned that if we are sick, our noses would stuffed up and it’s hard for us to smell things.  The last sense they learned about is touch.  We  touch things with our hands.  We can can feel different textures and can tell if things are soft, rough, smooth, bumpy, etc.  They learned that some people may have a sensory issue where some textures may bother them.

We made a list of Zz words, read the Zz book and recalled words heard in the story.  We an activity where the children had to listen to different animal sounds and try to identity what animal it was.  We did a taste test where we tasted different foods and the children had to tell me if it was sweet, sour, bitter, or salty.  I think they had fun with this activity because it was something different.  We did a sight word review of sight words that we already did.  We did an activity where they had to touch different objects and say if it was smooth, hard, rough, etc.

We practiced counting the math way by using our hands to learn how to add numbers.  We counted by 2’s and the children practiced on their own.  We listened to Jack Hartmann’s Count to 100 song.   The children did an activity where they had to figure what foods were the same, different, and they had to say how they were the same or different.  We did a building block activity where the children were given different manipulatives to use to build something.  The children did an activity where they counted out the number of noses they see on task cards.

We drew a picture of something that we see in our classroom, we did an activity where we used the food that we tasted and made into an art before we ate it.  The children made a collage of different textures.

We focused this week on learning how to play together by communicating with our peers and listening to what they have to say.  I wanted the children to focus on using their words and telling their peers what they do and do not like during the game.

We are having a great Special Friend’s Breakfast and the children are so excited to have breakfast with their special friend.  Thank you so much for coming!  We have music as well with Ms. Carly.  I think its safe to say that we had a very busy week!

Please make sure your children are dressed warmly and they have coats until the weather warms up.  We do not have any extra jackets for the children.  They get cold when they do not have the right jacket.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out!
