It’s colors and shapes week! The children had lots of fun with this theme because they learned that colors have different shades and they learned 2-D and 3-D shapes. I showed them different shades of colors and asked them to identify them as to what color it would belong to. The children were able to identify the color category it would go to. They learned that the 3-D shapes have names but not what they think it is. For example, they were shown a ball and I asked them what shape it is; they said it was a circle but it actually is sphere. They were asking why it was called a different name and I had to explain that it was considered a 3-D shape and it wasn’t flat like a 2-D shape.
We did a Bb word list where they gave me a list of words that start with the letter. They traced letters in sand using alphabet cards for reference. We named things that are yellow, blue, and red. They practiced writing letters using a red marker and letter cards. We did a dictation where they were asked what was their favorite color and why. I wrote down their answers and they drew a picture using their favorite color. We also did a shape activity where they had to verbally say what the shape was.
The children did pattern blocks using the pattern mats, They did a counting activity where they counted blue “gems” as they picked them out of the bin. They did a tracing activity where they traced a triangle using red counting bears and frogs. We did a math counting activity where they had to count out the green circles I gave them.
They did a shape house, circle bees, and made a rainbow with clouds. I brought in bee pollen and honey for them to see because they wanted to know what bee pollen looks like. We watched a short video on how honey is made and they got to see how the beekeeper carefully takes the honeycomb out of the container. He made a small slit in the honeycomb and the children watched as the bees repaired the slit that the beekeeper made. In the video, they saw children eating the honey with honeycomb. They asked me if you can eat the honeycomb and I said that you can. Some said they want to try it while others said they would not eat it.
It was a fun week learning new things about shapes, colors and bees! If you have any questions or concern, please feel free to reach out!
