This week, we learned about our 5 Senses and we did focused on 1 sense a day. The children learned how senses affect people, how some people may lose their sense due to injury or illness, and they learned how they can use the other senses to help them. They learned that people who are hard of hearing or deaf use hearing devices to hear, blind people use guide dogs and canes to get around. They also use braille to read and this also helps them get around. We talked about our sense of smell and they learned that we can smell different things and they said that they smell different things every day which is so true! They learned that our tongue has 4 taste buds: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. For our last sense which is touch, the children learned that some people may not like the feel of certain things which causes the person to not want to touch things. Some said that they don’t like to touch slimy things like snakes while others don’t like the feel of rough things such as sand paper.
We made a chart where the children indicated what color their eyes are, we talked about how different our eyes are and how they help us see. They did a letter matching game where they had to match the lowercase letters to uppercase letters and they identified the sound the letter makes. We did a taste test where the children told me if the items was sweet, salty, bitter, or sour. We made letters out of popsicle sticks. We did an activity where they practiced writing sight words and lowercase letters.
The children did an activity where they walked around the classroom looking for different numbers, shapes, and they identified what they were. THey used the geoboards and rubber bands to make shapes they see. They did a number puzzle mat that had numbers, tally marks, names of numbers, and objects to count. They looked at the different eyes of humans and animals and talked about how they were the same or different. The children worked on number puzzles.
They drew a picture of something where they had to highlight the eyes. They wanted to draw pictures of their choice using the books that we have on the bookshelf while others wanted to tear paper and create something different. We did an art activity where they cut and glued paper. This is a great way for them to practice their cutting skills.
Our Special Friend’s Breakfast is on Friday, March 20 and the children are so excited for it!
