It is bug week throughout the center and we have had a lot of fun exploring our “bugs” in the classroom. They have played with our plush insects in our bug jars and after listening to insect puppets tell stories, the children were given the opportunity to then discover what the puppets were all about, including colors, how many legs they have, and if they had wings. We have had several chances to dodge the raindrops and play outside, which is their most enjoyable portion of their day. Shakers have been shaken, rings have been dropped into containers, balls have been rolled, and blocks have been stacked. Several of the older children tried removing pom poms from whisks and all were encouraged to try out the tunnel, some love crawling straight through it while others are a little more cautious. The younger babies had some fun interactions together as we sat them across from one another while they practiced sitting, and they were able to watch the other one, while smiling and babbling at each other. Peek-a-boo has been initiated and played between all the children while different aspects of fine and gross motor skills were being worked on by everyone. Holding toys, passing them back and forth in their hands, rolling both ways, furniture walking, independent walking, and climbing steps have all been demonstrated this week. Books about insects have been read and fun songs like Ants Go Marching, The Itsy, Bitsy, Spider, and Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee have been sung while showing them the movements that accompany those songs, which anything that gets them moving, is always a big hit. Overall, this week has been very exciting and fun, and next week promises much more!
