Aloha! That means hello and goodbye in Hawaii but it also had deeper meaning for love, compassion, and mercy. This word has different meanings depending on how you are using the word. The children learned that the word is used respectfully and if they were in Hawaii, they would hear that word a lot. They learned a lot about Hawaii such as they are 5 hours behind us, they do not get any snow because it’s always warm there, and the beaches are beautiful! They learned that the capital of Hawaii is Honolulu and Hawaii has 8 islands which have different names. We learned that we travel by airplane or boat to get to Hawaii and the children learned that Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. We had to much fun learning about Hawaii!
We made a Tt word list, we came up with a list of words that are associated with Hawaii, the children matched the lowercase letters to uppercase letters, and we practiced writing Tt on the magic writing board. They also practiced writing words from the Hawaii word list that we created. We have been working on letter sounds and they listened to several songs and the most popular one they seem to like is Jack Hartman’s Letter Sounds song.
They created shapes using the shape cards and pattern blocks, practiced writing numbers using number cards for reference, and we used the Y connectors to count out how many we would need to make a lei. We have been working on number recognition 0-20 and the children are starting to learn what number comes before or after the number that I call out.
We drew flowers using crayons, the children used their imaginations and did a watercolor painting of something that reminds them of Hawaii and they made necklace lei.
We dd Hula in the Coola where the children learned how to do the Hula with the entire center and we did the limbo with the Young Toddlers. It was so cute seeing the PreK 2 children helping the young toddlers. We wore our leis that we had made plus the ones that we have here at the center. It was a fun day! Speaking of Young Toddlers, they invited us to their Magic Show dress rehearsal where we got to see them perform magic tricks! We talked about it afterwards and wondered how did they do those magic tricks! Thank you, Young Toddler room for inviting us to your magic show!!
If you haven’t done so, please make sure your child has their snow gear such as snow pants, snow boots, and so on because we have a limited number of snow gear here at the center.
