This week’s theme is Gardening and we talked about what a garden needs. The children said, “A garden needs water, soil, seeds, air, and lots of love to grow”. We talked about different types of garden such as flower, sunflower, fruits, vegetables, to name a few. We talked about how long it takes for certain flowers, fruits, and vegetables to grow. The children learned that it takes 4 months for a sunflower to fully bloom and some plants may not take as long. The children learned that animals and humans rely on plants, fruits, and vegetables to survive. They learned that seeds need to move either by our hands, animals brushing against the flower, bees transporting pollen, and the wind. All of these things are what the seeds need in order to make new flowers.
The children did a dictation on What a Flower Needs to Grow and they drew a picture, they used Flexos to create letters while using the alphabet cards as reference, and they did a Flower Pot letter sound activity where they had to say the letter and what sound it makes. We did an activity as a class where they learned syllables. I had them say the word while clapping and hearing how many claps the syllable has. They loved this activity and they were still doing it when we were playing out on the playground.
They did an activity where they choose a number card and counted the number of seeds, we did number recognition where I will randomly say a number and they had to find the number in the classroom, and they played the Hi-Ho Cherry-o game. They traced shapes using the color wooden blocks and they created flowers out of the honeycomb connectors.
We painted with oranges and paint, we made our very own sunflower using coffee filters, construction paper, and markers. The children drew a picture of a garden they want to have some day.
We talked a lot this week about taking good care of our books. We have some friends who were throwing the books, bending the books, and dragging the books on the ground. I showed the children two books: one that was in excellent condition and one that falling apart. I explained that if we don’t take care of the books, the children who come in after they go off to Kindergarten will not be able to enjoy the books or read them. I modeled on how we read the book by putting the book in our laps, turning the pages carefully, and when we are done with the books, we put them back on the shelf carefully.
