This week, our theme is about Families and we talked about who is in our families. The children were able to say things like, “I have a sister, I have a brother, I’m the only child, I have 2 sister, and I have 2 brothers. We talked about how some families are different because they may have grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc living in same household. Some families may not have a mom or a dad living with them or maybe they have step parents. The children learned that some children have are adopted or living in foster homes and we explained that sometimes the children may not have a biological mom and a dad but that doesn’t mean they aren’t loved. They asked questions about if they cam go back to their mom and dad and we explained that sometimes they can’t and it all depends on the situation that the children are in. One of the children had mentioned that we are a school family and they are correct We see each other, play together, argue, and have fun just like a family does.
Speaking of having fun together, we made applesauce this week for our Feast! The children got to turn the crank to core, peel, and slice the apples! They loved it! They loved smelling the cinnamon and pouring the ingredients into the crock pot. We had the crock pot overflowing and they were so surprised that it wasn’t full anymore! We explained that the apples get cooked down and then mashed and that’s how applesauce is made. They asked for the recipe and I will print one up for them to take home. Our feast was a huge success and the children said they loved the applesauce! We are so happy it turned out so well!
We did a Kk word list and came up with different words that start with the letter. They practiced writing Kk since it’s a hard letter to write because some children tend to make uppercase letters instead of the lowercase. We did a letter patterning activity with the patten blocks. I read the story, Me and My Mom and I had them recall details they remembered in the story.
They did a subitizing activity where they had to verbally say how many dots are in the 10 frames but they were not allowed to count out the dots until after they say how many dots there are. They played Match It! matching game with a peer. The children did an activity where they rolled 2 dice to try to get 10 and they had so much fun because I heard them laughing because the dice wouldn’t land on the numbers they wanted. We made a chart of how many people that is in our family where the children had to use a marker to color in the squares.
They drew a picture of their families. We made feathers for our turkey and the children wrote their names and drew pictures. We made turkeys and they had to tell me what they were thankful on the turkey feathers.
While we are still working on our unicorn theme, I had read the book, How to Catch a Unicorn, the children noticed that there were traps throughout the book and they expressed that they wanted to make a trap in our classroom so that we can try to catch one. We had 2 boxes and the children worked in teams of 4 to color the box. They asked me to make a sign and make a rainbow paper chain which I did both. We originally had the trap set on the circle table but the children felt that it would be better if we set it over in the math area. We put raisins in the bowl and made a trail with the paper chain. We waited but the unicorn didn’t come right away but it did while we were in the bathroom! It left us a note and some small presents! The children were so excited that the trap was set off but disappointed that we didn’t catch a unicorn! I think the unicorn was too smart for our trap!
